One of the more popular answers to the question “What is your favorite season?” is the fall/Autumn time. When I was younger and people would answer this way I would be confused as to why. As a kid, I always loved summer because school was over and I loved winter because school was over and Santa was coming!
Now I am older and I don’t get summer breaks and I know Santa isn’t real, I find myself turning towards Autumn as my favorite season. But, why? What has changed as I have grown up to make me feel this way? Well, below I will answer and tell you why I, and other people, feel this way.
Activities
The fall time is the perfect time of the year to go out and do things. With the summer weather usually being overwhelming and sleep being a struggle. However, fall has the perfect balance, it has those warm days, but not too warm, and the nights are cool.
With the warmer days, you can go out in just a shirt and pants with a jumper there just in case. You can also do activities that require you to be outside, like apple picking and pumpkin picking with nice long walks in between.
Not only that but you have the sports coming back. Especially, my personal favorite, football and the Premier League. When fall starts in September, the league will be freshly started and the excitement will be at a high still. By this point, I would have already looked at the EPL winner odds and put my bets on to increase my excitement even more.
Psychological Reasons
There are actually several mental health reasons as to why fall is looked at so fondly by people and it is due to our brains’ chemistry. So this means that even if you think you don’t like fall, your brain most likely does! But why?
Marks A Fresh Start
Fall and the start of most seasons can feel like a fresh start. They are landmarks of the year and do a good job of separating the year nicely. The hangover of summer is there and fall afterwards, which is a relaxing month with the trees and skies looking pretty, mentally you feel like it’s a new chapter.
It is known that temporal landmarks throughout the year, like the start of a season or birthdays, can make you feel more motivated and ready to pursue your goals. It is believed that we are subconsciously remembering school days, the holidays are over and we are going back to school. That extra boost of motivation carries on to when we are grown.
A Steady Routine
We mentioned the summer hangover and this is a follow on from that. During the summertime, we are spending time with friends, going on vacations and being less strict with our schedules. As soon as fall comes around, the nights get shorter and the weather gets slightly colder and people want to stay in more.
Using the cooler weather and having less pressure on going out allows people to get some rest and fall into a nice sleep schedule before winter comes around. Going from those summer clothes to comfy fall clothes, like track pants and robes, is always a welcome return.
Halloween
A lot of people’s favorite holiday is Halloween. You can dress up, take your kids Trick or treating, get drunk and party as famous characters or people. It is one of my favorite seasons and is especially better because horror films are the most popular thing to watch. Especially with all the new horror films on their way to theaters soon.
